Difficulty

Choose your difficulty during Rowan’s opening introduction. Your choice is saved for the adventure, and the current mode appears in the normal pause menu. There is no in-game option to change it afterward. If you are unsure, choose Normal, the intended Platinum Five experience.

Difficulty changes teams, strategies, starter choices and encounters. It is not simply level scaling: Challenge does not systematically give every opponent higher levels.

Easy

Choose Easy for a more relaxed adventure, with lower opposing stats overall and fewer enemy held items. It gives you more room to explore and build a team without the same pressure in each battle. Teams can still use deliberate strategies and prepared movesets, so Easy is not designed to make every opponent trivial.

Normal

Normal is the intended Platinum Five experience and the recommended starting point if you are undecided. Its teams and encounters follow the project’s reference balance throughout the adventure. Choose it for the intended combination of exploration, team building and demanding battles as you progress through Sinnoh.

Challenge

Choose Challenge if you want preparation to matter more. Expect more demanding teams, stronger opposing stats, more held-item strategies and deliberately constructed movesets. Some team-building options can be more restricted or become available later because starter choices, wild encounters and wild-held resources differ. Consider how your team’s members work together and make use of the resources available to you.

What difficulty changes

Easy Normal Challenge
Battles More relaxed teams, lower opposing stats, fewer held items Intended Platinum Five balance More demanding teams, stronger opposing stats, more held-item strategies
Starter choices Mode-specific Mode-specific Mode-specific
Wild encounters Curated for Easy Curated for Normal Curated for Challenge

Shared across all modes

Story progression, field-move requirements, Infinite Candy, Portable Box and the main quality-of-life systems are shared. Challenge does not ban Bag use or force Set battle style.

All three modes share the same advisory level caps. They are displayed but not enforced; manage your team’s levels yourself if you want to follow them. See Badge Progression / Level Caps for the limits and progression roadmap.

Difficulty and Nuzlocke

Nuzlocke is separate and optional, and can be combined with Easy, Normal or Challenge. Its encounter, permanent-fainting and battle-item rules are independent of difficulty. Difficulty still changes the encounter pools those rules operate on.
